Train services run from Kirkby train station to Liverpool Central and Manchester Victoria via Wigan Wallgate, providing many other connections in the region
Services from Kirkby to Liverpool Central are provided by Merseyrail as part of the Merseyrail network, which links to other Merseyrail services on the Northern Line to Ormskirk, Southport and Hunts Cross, as well as one the Wirral Line to New Brighton, West Kirkby, Chester and Ellesmere Port. A new additional train station is planned for Headbolt Lane, extending the Merseyrail network. The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has suggested they intend to extend Merseyrail into Skelmersdale, which is not currently served by a train station.
Services from Kirkby to Manchester Victoria are provided by Northern Rail, with the Kirkby branch line directly linking in with mainline services at Wigan Wallgate. Northern Rail also operate a number of other routes closely linked to destinations from Kirkby, including Liverpool to Manchester, Southport to Wigan, and Ormskirk to Preston.
Additional services run from Wirral Line stations further south. Two different routes from Bidston and Chester provide services to Wrexham. Additional services run from Ellesmere Port through Runcorn East to Warrington Bank Quay.
Our map shows the mainline routes in red, Merseyrail network routes in yellow, Northern Rail routes in blue, and other routes in purple. If more than one type of service runs on a line, they are given priority in that order.
