Election of MEPs to the European Parliament
No further European Parliament elections to elect Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will take place as the UK has now left the European Union. We ceased to have representation on 31st January 2020, the formal date the UK left the EU.
The last European Parliament elections took place in May 2019 for the 9th European Parliament. It was originally planned that the UK would not take part in the 2019 European Parliament elections as a result of the UK referendum on membership of the European Union, and the triggering of Article 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon on 29th March 2017. However, the UK Government agreed an extension to the Article 50 process with the European Union, and as the UK continued to be a member of the EU after these elections it was necessary to elect new MEPs to ensure UK citizens are represented in the European Parliament.
The last MEPs for the North West of England were:
- Claire Fox – Brexit Party
- Henrik Overgaard-Nielsen – Brexit Party
- David Bull – Brexit Party
- Theresa Griffin – Labour
- Julie Ward – Labour
- Chris Davies – Liberal Democrats
- Jane Brophy – Liberal Democrats
- Gina Dowding – Green
